Bob Franco has built a career representing high-profile clients in bet-the-company cases, so it’s no surprise the Chicago litigator likes to maintain his adrenaline level, even on vacation. As a seasoned scuba diver, he’s plunged underwater all over the world, most recently hitting depths of 175 feet to explore the toxic cargo holds of sunken Japanese boats in Micronesia.

Franco’s not the only lawyer who eschews gentle breezes and swaying hammocks. Here we share the vacation adventures of four lawyers (Franco included) who embarked on special journeys filled with history, culture, nature and even fear. They share what they did, how they planned it, how they packed and even the great extents to which they went to stay in touch … or not.

High seas (and very high seas): Crossing the North Pacific in a sailboat.

Africa campout: Exploring the great outdoors in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa.

Family and the Far East: A luxury trip through China, Japan, Thailand and Cambodia.

Diving into history: Scuba tours of an old WWII ship graveyard.
