Fla. lawyer who disappeared turns himself in; feds say up to $8M in client funds is missing

A South Florida real estate lawyer who reportedly disappeared in early April along with between $3 million and $8 million in client escrow funds has turned himself in to the feds.

FBI officials in Miami say Timothy P. McCabe surrendered Thursday morning in West Palm Beach, CBS Miami reports, relying on some information from the Associated Press.

He was charged Wednesday with bank and wire fraud in a federal criminal complaint concerning money taken from his law firm and its title company’s accounts, the Sun-Sentinel reports. McCabe is also facing at least four lawsuits.

The amount missing has been previously reported as $3 million and $6 million, but court documents now say it could be as much as $8 million.

“It looks like he was fraudulent in all of his commercial dealings,” attorney William Scherer told the newspaper. He represents a real estate broker who says he lost $67,000.

McCabe was in charge of the Lake Worth office of McCabe & Samiljan. His law partner said he had no knowledge of any wrongdoing at the time and is cooperating with authorities.

McCabe’s law license was suspended in April.

The articles don’t include any comment from McCabe or his legal counsel.
