Former Ballard Spahr chairman Arthur Makadon dies at age 70

Jul 25, 2013, 04:43 pm CDT

Arthur Makadon, who served as chairman of Ballard Spahr from 2002 until 2011, has died at the age of 70.

The cause of death was lung cancer, report the Legal Intelligencer and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Makadon learned he was in the late stage of the disease after checking into the University of Pennsylvania Hospital about a week ago, the Intelligencer says. He died on Wednesday.

CBS Philly calls Makadon “the very definition of a mover-and-shaker” while the Philadelphia Inquirer says he was an “insider’s insider.” He advised former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and had close relationships with many political and business leaders.

Makadon helped transform Ballard Spahr into a national presence, according to the Intelligencer.

In a statement, the law firm called Makadon “as fine a litigator as the firm has ever seen. He was tenacious and possessed of uncommon wisdom and impeccable judgment. He cared deeply about Ballard and the people who work here, and he led the firm as chair with passion, compassion, and resolve. He was fun-loving, irreverent, fierce and beloved.”
