Judge appeals sanction for his relationship with prosecutor

Feb 13, 2014, 04:40 pm CST

A Las Vegas family court judge is appealing a recent ethics ruling which would suspend him without pay for three months due to his relationship with a former prosecutor in his courtroom.

Judge Steven Jones is appealing the latest ruling in the legal ethics case against him to the Nevada Supreme Court, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal. If the court suspends enforcement of the sanction while the appeal is pending, it appears that Jones possibly could continue to receive a paycheck from his $200,000-a-year job without interruption for the remainder of 2014, until his term on the bench expires.

He had filed to run for re-election to another six-year term, but his lawyer told an ethics panel he planned to withdraw, the Associated Press reports.

Jones did not respond to a previous ABA Journal phone message seeking his comment.
