Judge Tosses Suit by DC Lawyer Claiming to Be LeBron James’ Father

Sep 15, 2011, 12:09 pm CDT

A federal judge has dismissed a $4 million lawsuit by a Washington, D.C., lawyer claiming to be LeBron James’ father.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly cited several problems with the suit by Leicester Bryce Stovell, including a failure to show any actual damages, according to The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times.

Stovell is a former lawyer with the Securities and Exchange Commission who graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1980. He had claimed he had sex with James’ mother after meeting her at a Washington, D.C., bar in 1984. The suit claimed James’ mother committed fraud by concealing Stovell’s identity as the father.

Stovell apparently believed that companies would pay him for being the basketball star’s father, but “any such recovery would be wholly speculative,” Kollar-Kotelly wrote. Nor can Stovell recover damages for the loss of James’ love and affection in an action for common law fraud, she said.
