Top NY Court OKs Temp Admission of Out-of-State Lawyers for Pro Bono Work re Hurricane Sandy

Nov 15, 2012, 05:57 pm CST

Invoking for the first time an appellate court rule that was adopted last year, New York’s highest court announced Thursday that out-of-state lawyers will temporarily be allowed to practice in New York on a pro hac vice basis, in order to provide pro bono representation to victims of Hurricane Sandy.

They must work under the supervision of a nonprofit bar association or similar group and can’t appear in court, Reuters reports.

An announcement (PDF) from the Court of Appeals, with attachments, notifies the state bar that the Major Disaster Rule has been invoked and provides additional details about applicable requirements.
