‘Passwords are dead,’ Google security expert says

Sep 12, 2013, 07:46 pm CDT

If you’re a tech startup that plans to secure user data with passwords, the “game is over for” you, a Google executive said.

“Passwords are dead,” Heather Adkins, the company’s manager of information security, said on a TechCrunch Disrupt panel, CNET reports. “Passwords are done at Google.”

According to Adkins, who mentioned Google’s use of two-step authentication, the company is working to create in areas of nonstandard password security.

She did not give specifics, according to CNET, but did mention that the company is experimenting with hardware-based tokens.

Adkins also brought up Google’s experimentation with a Motorola system that authenticates users by having them touch a device to something embedded in articles of clothing.

“A hacker can’t steal that from you,” she said.
