Patton Boggs says 17 partners are exiting; some may open a Dallas office for Holland & Knight

Jun 25, 2013, 11:30 am CDT

Patton Boggs confirms that 17 partners of the firm announced last week they will be leaving.

Most worked out of the firm’s Dallas office, but others were in Denver and Washington, D.C., the Washington Post (reg. req.) reports on its Capital Business page.

At least some of the Dallas lawyers apparently will be manning a new office there for Holland & Knight, which confirms that it is opening a Dallas office and that it will be staffed with some lawyers from Patton Boggs.

Three months ago, Patton Boggs had laid off 65 employees, nearly half of them lawyers. That still leaves around 500 lawyers on the roster at the Washington, D.C.-based firm, which is known for its lobbying work.

“Recently a number of attorneys at the firm announced their intention to move on,” the firm said in a written statement provided to the Post. “Movements of this kind are a regular occurrence in the industry, and Patton Boggs, like its peers, will continue to pursue strategic hirings and acquisitions where they make sense. These colleagues are our friends and we thank them for their service and wish them well in their new endeavors.”

Weil Gotshal & Manges announced Monday in an internal memo that the is laying off 60 associates and 110 staff. The 1,200-attorney New York-based firm also said about 30 partners are getting pay cuts, attributing the changes to a reduction in the corporate bankruptcy work for which the law firm is known and fewer corporate deals in a “new normal” economy.
