A federal prison guard who is eight months pregnant has been arrested on charges of having sex with the inmate whose baby she is carrying.
Nancy Gonzalez was arraigned Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn, N.Y., on charges of sexual abuse of a person in custody, which stems from the fact that inmates cannot legally consent to sex, the New York Times reports.
Gonzalez, a guard at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, is accused of having sex with inmate Ronell Wilson, a convicted cop killer who is awaiting resentencing in the execution-style murder of two undercover New York City police officers during a gun sting operation in 2003.
Wilson, whose death sentence was overturned by an appeals court due to prosecutorial error, is facing resentencing later this year. During his 2007 trial, Wilson wrote a letter to another inmate in which he said that the possibility of of a death sentence had made him want to have a child before he died.
Gonzalez has admitted having sex with Wilson with the intention of having his baby, prosecutors say.
"I took a chance because I was so vulnerable and wanted to be loved, and now I am carrying his child," she said in one recorded telephone conversation with another inmate with whom she has also admitted having a relationship.
After her arraignment, her lawyer, Anthony L. Ricco, told reporters that Gonzalez has had a "very tragic life," the details of which "have affected her judgment.
"People find love in the strangest places," he said.
