Too much work, too little time is a chief cause of stress for London trainee lawyers

Jun 6, 2014, 10:45 am CDT

A survey of lawyers in the United Kingdom chronicles the causes and pervasiveness of stress.

The survey by Lawyer 2B, a sister publication of the Lawyer, found that a chief cause of stress for lawyer trainees was too much work and too little time. Though 78.5 of the trainees listed this as a chief cause of their stress, it was cited by only 55 percent of the partners. The Lawyer and the Careerist summarized the results.

The second leading cause of stress for trainees is difficult or unpleasant superiors, cited by about 44 percent. Bigger stress issues for partners and other lawyers are work affecting their personal life, and overly demanding clients.

Fifty-seven percent of trainees surveyed in London’s top five magic-circle law firms work more than 55 hours per week, compared with 46 per cent of trainees at other large London firms and 25 per cent at U.S. firms in London.
