British Judge, a Well-Known Author, Is Temporarily Suspended After Arrest; Police Won’t State Reason

Oct 11, 2012, 08:52 pm CDT

A well-known British barrister who serves as a part-time judge in London has been temporarily taken off the bench.

Constance Briscoe, 55, was arrested on Saturday by Kent Police and released on bail, and subsequently has been removed from hearing cases, according to the Telegraph. The basis for her arrest has not been detailed, although another Telegraph article says it took place at her home in south London.

In a written statement provided by a spokeswoman, the Office for Judicial Complaints said “The Lord Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor have suspended Constance Briscoe from the judiciary pending the outcome of the police investigation into the allegations against her. It would be inappropriate to comment further whilst the investigation is active.”

Briscoe made headlines several years ago when she won a libel suit brought by her own mother over Ugly, Briscoe’s autobiography about the difficult childhood she overcame to succeed in life.

The Daily Mail, the Guardian and Legal Week also have stories about the current situation.
