White Supremacist Lawyer Accused of Plotting to Kill Wife, Mother-in-Law

Jun 15, 2010, 11:29 am CDT

A lawyer who has defended white supremacists is now a defendant himself, accused of plotting to murder his wife and mother-in-law.

The lawyer, Edgar Steele, known for racist and anti-Semitic views, is accused of hiring a hit man to kill the two women in a car crash staged to look like an accident, the Idaho Statesman reports. According to allegations in a probable cause affidavit, the man Steele hired, one of his occasional employees, wore a wire and recorded Steele plotting the crime.

A court hearing for Steele on Monday was delayed after the U.S. attorney’s office received a letter containing white powder, the Spokane Spokesman-Review reports. The powder was sent to eight federal buildings in Washington, Idaho and Utah, including U.S. attorney’s offices in Coeur d’Alene and Boise, Idaho, according to the Associated Press. Tests indicated the substance was a material found in chalk and limestone.
