On-the-go lawyer’s guide to keeping fit and healthy (podcast with transcript)

The podcast refers to if we have 10 minutes – but that doesn't take into account the amount of time it takes to get dressed before and cleaned up after. What if we truly have only 15 minutes? Are there any exercises that you might recommend – maybe even without leaving the office?

I was wondering the same thing as Sam. If we are going to try and do 10 minutes of exercises here and there throughout the day, it would have to be something that does not necessarily require one to take a shower afterwards or use gym equipment. Any suggestions with those restrictions in mind would be helpful.

While sweating isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's understandable that taking the extra time to change & shower encroaches on time you already don't have. Keep in mind, small soundbites of exercise or activity won't get you ready for the Olympics, but movement is a good thing. And ultimately, 10 push ups, 10 minutes of walking, or 10 body weight squats are better than zero. Here's a few strategies you can employ.

1. Drop down & do 5 push ups on top of every even hour you're at work(8am, 10, 12, 2...), even if from your knees. Most everyone can do 5 knee or military push ups, and this isn't enough work to overheat the body & build up a sweat. Let this be a MWF routine.

2. Do 10 body weight squats on top of each odd hour (9, 11, 1, 3...) you're at work MWF.

3. Try 10 desk dips on top of each even hour Tues & Thurs.

4. Do 5 sit & holds on top of each odd hour T & Th. Squat down into a 90 degree seated position & hold for 10-30 seconds.

5. Try 1-2 x 5-10 minute walk breaks outdoors mid morning & afternoon to stimulate blood flow, catch some sun, & stimulate the creative juices.

6. Straight out of bed in the morning, when you're home from work, or right before you head out the door for the day, consider sweating with this 5 minute body weight workout
