After a decade of litigation, a historic California home was about to be demolished. But a last-minute stay of the demolition order means an epic legal battle over the future of the Juana Briones house in Palo Alto isn't yet over.

Preservationists hope that there may still be a way to save the residence, built in the 1840s for a well-known rancher and businesswoman, reports the San Jose Mercury News. They are pitted against the home's owners, who have obtained at least acquiescence from the city of Palo Alto to their plans to demolish it. T

he next step is to determine at a July hearing whether the California Environmental Quality Act requires further review before the demolition can go forward.
