$5K DePaul Student Award Honors Slain IP Lawyer

A $5,000 award has been established in memory of a Chicago intellectual property lawyer who was murdered in a shooting rampage at his law firm in late 2006.
The scholarship will be awarded to a third-year student at DePaul University College of Law who is "expected to make the greatest contribution to the practice of intellectual property law as determined by the school," DePaul reports in a press release. Additional details are provided in a student newsletter (PDF) listing of awards and scholarships. The application deadline this year is Feb. 12.
The award is being funded by the family of Allen J. Hoover and the law firm where he was a partner, Wood, Phillips, Katz, Clark & Mortimer.
“My family thought this was the natural thing to do,” says Hoover’s son, Allen E. Hoover, who is also a Chicago IP practitioner. "DePaul trained my father and got him started in the field of IP law, and today it continues to train the best and brightest lawyers of tomorrow. The award will help others remember my father and his legacy as an IP lawyer. It is a mark of distinction that will follow its recipients throughout their careers.”
