After 247 Lateral Hires, Hunton & Williams Isn’t Finished With Expansion

The managing partner of Hunton & Williams says the law firm’s recent acquisition of nine Akin Gump lawyers is consistent with his vision for expansion.

Wally Martinez told the Am Law Daily that the firm wants to increase its national reach by taking on large groups of top-notch lawyers in target practice areas.

"Our preferred strategy is to bring in larger groups as much as possible," Martinez told the publication. "We will bring in ones and twos, but there has to be a real niche area that needs to be filled."

Most of the new hires from Akin Gump are class action litigators. Earlier this month, Hunton announced it is acquiring eight other lawyers from Akin Gump who work in labor and employment law.

Since January 2007, Hunton has made 247 lateral hires, 100 of them from the now-defunct Jenkens & Gilchrist in Dallas. Martinez said he expects to hit the 250 mark soon.
