ABA to Weigh Position on Forced Retirement

Aging attorneys will be one of the subjects taken up at the ABA Annual Meeting that begins tomorrow in San Francisco.
A resolution before the policy-making House of Delegates calls on law firms to discontinue mandatory retirement policies, the National Law Journal reports. ABA President Karen J. Mathis supports the measure.
Mandatory retirement relies on “an arbitrary age limit that doesn't look at vitality, intelligence and the ability to perform a job," she told the NLJ.
Mathis has backed an initiative called Second Season of Service that encourages retired lawyers to volunteer pro bono time. A program on her initiative is scheduled for Thursday. The ABA Journal will follow Mathis that day, covering every event in her 15-hour schedule.
