Kim Koopersmith will join the meager ranks of female managing partners at America’s largest law firms when she takes on the job for Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld on Oct. 1.

The move comes as the law firm deals with partner defections and increasing discontent, the American Lawyer reports.

Only a handful of women fill the managing partner role at Am Law 100 law firms, the story says. Koopersmith is a litigator based in New York who helped review the law firm’s management structure in a recent revamping. She will be Akin Gump's first managing partner.

In the new job, she will continue in her role overseeing associate recruiting and other professional development efforts.
