Akin Gump Will Close at Least One Office Due to Loss of IP Rainmaker

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld has closed its Taiwan office and is re-evaluating its Silicon Valley office after the loss of rainmaker Yitai Hu.

Akin Gump chairman R. Bruce McLean told the Recorder that Hu kept both offices busy with patent work since he opened them in 2005.

Among Hu’s big clients were RealTek Semiconductor Corp., Sunplus Technology Co. and Elan Microelectronics Corp. McLean doesn’t think the companies will remain with the firm, the story says.

McLean said Hu had split his time between Silicon Valley and the overseas office, but Hu wanted to stay permanently in his native Taiwan. McLean told the publication the firm couldn’t agree to that, since the work in Taiwan is lower-paying and he needed to be in the United States to work on the big patent cases here.
