Alabama lawyer and former Navy Reserve officer Sterling DeRamus, who wrapped up his solo practice to serve on reconstruction teams in Afghanistan, has made it home safely.

DeRamus and his experience answering the call to duty as a solo practitioner were featured in the ABA Journal and his regular, candid Dispatches from Afghanistan were made part of a Journal Web Extra.

In his latest dispatch, DeRamus writes about his "Best Trip Yet," the one that took him from Kuwait to Birmingham where he saw his two children for the first time in nine months.

DeRamus says that he appreciates the honor of serving his country, even in a small way. He notes that he never fired his weapon and, while he traveled throughout the country, he "only heard gunfire in anger twice."

While he's eager to get reacquainted with his family and happy for the chance to celebrate Memorial Day with them, he has one big question on his mind: "What do I do now?"
