Twelve Grand Rapids, Mich., law firms signed a pledge this week to boost diversity through a collaborative five-year program that promotes the recruitment, retention and advancement of women and minorities in the local legal community.

The joint program, which is organized through the Grand Rapids Bar Association, builds on past initiatives of the individual firms and marks the first time the legal community within Grand Rapids will tackle diversity issues collectively, Michigan Live reported.

The report also notes that the number of women law partners in Grand Rapids saw only a slight boost to 15.89 percent for 2010, from 15.14 percent in 2009, according to an annual report on law firm demographics from the NALP, The Association of Legal Career Professionals.
