Two people are dead and a suspect is in custody following a shooting this morning at an Alabama lawyer’s office near the Marion County courthouse in Hamilton.

Some news reports say a shooting also occurred at an accounting office near the courthouse. City Hall, the courthouse and nearby schools were locked down, but reopened after the suspect was apprehended.

A spokeswoman for the county sheriff’s office confirmed the shooting but did not give the identity of the shooter, the victims or the law office, the Associated Press reports. Other news reports say the shooting occurred near the Marion County courthouse.

A WVTM story, relying on information from the Hamilton mayor, says the shooter went to the Scott Hunt law firm, which maps show is very near that courthouse.

WTVA says Hunt witnessed a fatal shooting at his office but was not injured. The assailant then apparently proceeded to the accounting firm, where another fatal shooting occurred. A total of 17 bullet casings outside the accounting office are marked as evidence, the station reports.

WVTM reports that the suspect was shot in the leg and grazed in the arm and is being treated at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.

Representatives of the county probate office told WVTM the incident occurred at about 11 a.m.

An investigation is ongoing.
