Law Grads Rita and Gustave Hauser Give $40M to Harvard; Floyd Abrams Donates $3M to Yale
A former BigLaw partner and a cable television pioneer are donating $40 million to Harvard University, one of two institutions where the two spouses earned law degrees.
The money from Rita and Gustave Hauser will be used to provide teaching grants to faculty, adminstrators and students and to improve teaching facilities to allow enhanced technology and innovative teaching methods, reports the Harvard Gazette.
“This is in line with the philosophy of our giving,” said Rita Hauser, who graduated from Harvard Law School in 1958. “We are giving a sizable gift, which is just the beginning … This is really a startup if you like, and we hope it will be a catalytic gift.”
A New York University Law School web page offers biographies for the two, each of whom holds law degrees from both Harvard and NYU.
Meanwhile, famed First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams is giving $3 million to Yale Law School, his alma mater, reports the National Law Journal.
His gift will fund the Floyd Abrams Institute for Freedom of Expression at Yale Law School, which will promote scholarship, host a conference and offer a legal clinic for law students interested in litigating cases, drafting legislation and advising on policy related to the topic.
