The chief judge of the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has been tapped to chair the Executive Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States.

Judge Anthony Scirica will take over the job May 1, according to a press release. He was appointed by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.

Scirica was formerly a prosecutor and a member of the Pennsylvania legislature.

The Executive Committee is the senior executive arm of the Judicial Conference and can act on behalf of the conference between regular sessions. The conference is the policy-making body for the federal courts.
