A Minneapolis law firm has made a big splash by jumping into the patent arena with a six-lawyer team from Dorsey & Whitney, including the local chief of that firm’s patent practice group.

Devan Padmanabhan will now head the new patent practice group at Winthrop & Weinstine, reports the Star Tribune. Another partner and four associates from Dorsey & Whitney made the move with him.

“This is our big entré into the patent world,” Scott Dongoske, who serves as president of the 100-attorney Winthrop firm, told the newspaper. “It’s lucrative, and it’s required these days. Intellectual property and patent law are important aspects in virtually all business transactions. People need to protect their property rights.”
