7-figure divorce legal bill is 'financial suicide' for BigLaw partner and his wife, judge says
A BigLaw partner and his wife are committing “financial suicide” by racking up a seven-figure divorce bill, a judge says.
Aloke Ray, who works for White & Case, and his wife, a physician, have each spent some 430,000 British pounds on their divorce case, so far, according to the Guardian and Spear’s.
That adds up to a total of about $1.3 million in U.S. dollars, at the current exchange rate.
Dr. Charoo Sekhri, like Ray, is originally from India and the couple met in Singapore, where Ray practices. However, she filed for divorce in London, where she is now working for a hospital, the articles explain.
Mr. Justice Holman of the High Court agreed that the British legal system has jurisdiction to hear the case, but warned the couple about the peril of dissipating a quarter of their estimated net worth on a divorce and child-custody case in which there is little dispute over income and assets, the articles say.
Ray wants to pursue the divorce case in India.
