Seven lawyers have exited one of the largest law firms in Sacramento, Calif., to form a new boutique.

Known as Mitchell Chadwick, the fledgling firm has former Downey Brand partners Patrick Mitchell and G. Braiden Chadwick at the helm. They focus their practice on land use and oil, gas and mining matters, according to the Sacramento Bee and the Sacramento Business Journal.

Four associates also left Downey Brand with the partners Friday to join the new boutique, and a fifth associate from Downey Brand has since joined the group.

“It’s a bruise for Downey Brand, but they’ll heal and get better,” Wayne Russell of Chase Legal Professionals told the Sacramento Business Journal. “They have great leadership and have been the strongest firm in Sacramento for a couple of decades, but this is going to hurt.”

Downey Brand had 122 attorneys on its roster in June of last year, but now lists 100 lawyers on its website.
