911 call will earn $800K for couple bound and gagged by rogue ex-cop
A married couple bound and gagged in February by rogue ex-cop Christopher Dorner stands to earn $800,000 for calling 911 and describing the former Los Angeles police department employee to authorities.
“Had Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds failed promptly to escape their restraints and contact law enforcement, it is likely Dorner would have escaped,” said a LAPD report of Jim and Karen Reynolds, who owned the California condominium in which they were held. They are among a dozen individuals who have sought a portion of a $1 million award for information leading to Dorner’s capture, the Los Angeles Times (reg. req.) reports.
As an earlier L.A. Times article details, Dorner, who was being sought as a suspect in slayings related to what he felt was his unfair firing from the department, had apparently been holed up in the couple’s condo for days when they surprised him there Feb. 12.
Dorner died later that day, after he was surrounded in a mountainside cabin and a shootout ensued. He reportedly committed suicide once the cabin caught fire.
A committee of three retired judges decided how to apportion the reward money, which was donated by the police department and others.
Another 5 percent is to go to tow truck driver R. Lee McDaniel, who positively identified the vehicle Dorner was driving, the newspaper reports. The remaining 15 percent is to go to Snow Summit ski resort employee Daniel M. McGowan, who spotted a burning vehicle that turned out to be the one Dorner had been using. It led authorities to the cabin in which he made his final stand.
