For 65 years, a Texas personal injury firm that bills itself as the oldest such practice in the state has been housed in a historic building in downtown Houston.

But the mahogany doors and impressive furnishings that distinguished Abraham Watkins Nichols Sorrels Agosto & Friend could soon be on the discard heap, following major flooding that put the ground floor of the building five feet under water.

“This whole area was submerged—it was like a river. It was a pretty surreal scene,” attorney Muhammad Aziz told WXIA. The force of the water was so strong that it moved a marble conference table that weighed literally thousands of pounds, he said.

Another WXIA page shows more photos of the damage to the firm’s offices, including the marble conference table, now lying on its side. A photo caption says it was moved to the other side of the building by flood waters.

A law firm web page discusses the history of the Abraham Watkins building on Commerce Street, which features 22-foot ceilings and massive chandeliers.
