Even in the conservative London legal market, a growing number of attorneys are starting to use Twitter to gain a higher professional profile by talking about themselves, their views on legal issues of import and their careers.

That includes young lawyers such as Ashley Connick, who used his Twitter account to talk about his life as a would-be solicitor. That helped him get a job at one of London’s prestigious magic circle law firms, reports the Guardian.

One common denominator among the British lawyers who tweet about legal matters is what the newspaper describes as “a certain nothing-to-lose adventurous [spirit]—albeit usually at the milder end of the spectrum—in giving of themselves through their tweets.”

That quality, the Guardian suggests, may spring from “the fact that most have developed their online profiles from relatively lowly real-life professional stations, giving them the freedom and incentive to push boundaries in order to get their names out there.”

However, it may be more difficult for some of those who are have become more well-known since they started tweeting to remain adventurous and authentic in their tweets once they have more to lose, the newspaper predicts.

Nonetheless, maintaining contact with current and potential clients via the social networking microblog is increasingly becoming the norm for law firms.

“Since many of our clients use Twitter to swap information and ideas and make connections and contacts, it was a logical step for us to set up our own Twitter feed,” says partner Laura Harper of Ward Hadaway, who serves as head of creative industries at the United Kingdom law firm. .

“We’ve been using it since the start of this year,” she tells Bdaily Business Network, “and have found it to be a really useful communication tool in addition to all our other traditional marketing methods which we use to let people know what services we provide and how we can help them.”

Ward Hadaway is one of the firms included in Flagship Consulting’s list of the Social Media Legal Hot 100 in the U.K.
