The Internet job placement site Lateral Link has some competition from a new venture called Legal Recruiting Authority.

Lateral Link pays up to $10,000 to associates who find a job though its website, while Legal Recruiting Authority pays $20,000, the American Lawyer reports. Both recruitment sites allow associates at top law firms to join and access a database of available positions. The money paid to associates using Lateral Link comes from placement fees paid by the law firm to the website, according to Lateral Link principal T.J. Duane.

Some traditional legal recruiters questioned the payments, saying they appear to be kickbacks, the article says. The code of ethics by the National Association of Legal Search Consultants bars such payments, a position deemed “anti-competitive” by Lateral Link’s Duane.

The story also questioned whether the business model would be successful. So far, Legal Recruiting Authority has about 100 members and has placed about 10 lawyers. Lateral Link has about 6,000 members and has placed about 100 lawyers.
