A 'mild uptick' in 2012 legal hiring doesn't keep pace with US job growth
The legal sector added 7,800 jobs last year, but the increase didn’t keep pace with the growth in jobs throughout the U.S. economy.
The “mild uptick” in legal hiring amounts to a 0.7 percent gain from 2011, compared with a 1.4 percent increase in jobs in the broader economy, the Am Law Daily reports, citing figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Small gains in legal employment over the last few years have not replaced jobs lost during the recession, the story says. The legal sector lost 60,100 jobs from 2008 through 2009, then gained 4,800 jobs in 2010 and 400 jobs in 2011.
The legal sector is projected to grow by 64,200 jobs, an increase of 6 percent, between 2010 and 2020, according to the bureau’s Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections office.
