ABA House Says 'No' to No Nukes

In the first close vote of its two-day session, the ABA policy-making House of Delegates today defeated a resolution that called on Congress to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
The final tally was 206 votes against the measure and 175 in favor. It was the first vote that required House members to literally stand to be counted.
Douglas Copeland of Clayton, Mo., who spoke against Resolution 108A (PDF), noted he was not in favor of nuclear tests, but he felt that the issue was one the ABA shouldn’t take a position on because it doesn’t directly relate to a legal issue.
