ABA Silver Gavel Awards Honor Documentaries on Fights for Justice

Two documentaries on people who fought for justice are among four Silver Gavel award winners announced this week by the American Bar Association.
The Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts recognize outstanding work that fosters the American public’s understanding of law and the legal system, according to a press release. The Standing Committee on Gavel Awards named four winners and seven honorable mentions from among nearly 200 entries.
The four winners are:
• For documentaries, THIRTEEN and Fork Films in association with WNET and ITVS: Women, War & Peace: I Came to Testify The documentary chronicles a group of 16 women who came forward to testify about their imprisonment by Serb forces during the Balkans war.
• For television, Idaho Public Television: The Color of Conscience: Human Rights in Idaho. The documentary features the story of a group of citizens who fought a neo-Nazi supremacist group.
• For newspapers, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “Imminent Danger.” The series looks at the 1971 legal decision governing requirements for forced confinement to mental health facilities and the difficulty of determining which patients are dangerous.
• For commentary, The Atlantic: “The Death Penalty in America.” The commentary concludes capital punishment is “a costly, inaccurate, racially biased, and unseemly proposition.”
