Being a summer associate at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan is no walk in the park.

Last month, when more than 70 Quinn Emanuel attorneys and summers hiked Mount St. Helens in the Pacific Northwest, two summer associates were temporarily lost. They slid down the mountain in the wrong direction on the way back and then followed recommended hiking protocol by staying put until searchers found them, chilled but otherwise OK, at about 3 a.m., partner John Quinn told Above the Law.

One reason the two weren’t found sooner is a lack of cell phone reception in the wilderness area. And that, it appears, is going to require the firm to recognize a fourth good reason for not checking e-mail hourly.

As another ABAJournal.com post noted last year, there were then three acceptable reasons for not being readily available to partners and clients: “Check E-Mail Hourly, Quinn Partner Says, Unless in Court, in Tunnel or Asleep.”
