After Guilty Pleas in Gun Cases, NBA Suspends 2 Wizards Guards for Season
After an alleged locker-room confrontation in December over a gambling debt in which apparently unloaded guns were reportedly displayed, two Washington Wizards guards have now been suspended by the National Basketball Association for the rest of the season.
The action announced today by commissioner David Stern followed guilty pleas earlier this month and earlier this week by Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton, respectively, to criminal charges. Crittenton got a year of unsupervised probation after his misdemeanor plea on Monday and Arenas is to be sentenced in March in his felony case.
The NBA suspension, however, was for violating league rules that prohibit firearms on its premises, reports Bloomberg.
“The issue here is not about the legal ownership and possession of guns, either in one’s home or elsewhere,” explains Stern in a press release today. “It is about possession of guns in the NBA workplace, which will not be tolerated.”
