Updated: A group calling itself the American Mustache Institute has made Attorney General Eric Holder a finalist in its Mustached American of the Year contest.

Other finalists include presidential adviser David Axelrod and pilot-hero Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the Chicago Tribune reports. The AMI’s website says Holder is the first “Mustached American” to serve as attorney general since Francis Biddle in 1945.

And how does Holder feel about his nomination? “I’d be honored to have that award but it’s nothing I’m pining for,” he said at a press briefing Tuesday. The Wall Street Journal’s Washington Wire covered Holder’s comments.

Holder said he had considered shaving his mustache this summer, but his children persuaded him not to do it. “And now I think I should have followed my gut,” he said.

The winner will be named at a “Stache Bash” on Oct. 30 in St. Louis featuring pop star John Oates. Updated at 6:50 p.m. CT to include Holder’s comments, covered by Washington Wire.
