A group affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban “facilitated” an attempted car bombing in New York City’s Times Square, said Attorney General Eric Holder today in a written statement announcing an indictment against a suspect in the failed attack.

Faisal Shahzad, 30, who was born in Pakistan and is a naturalized United States citizen, reportedly has been cooperating since his May 3 arrest. He now faces 10 charges under today’s federal grand jury indictment in Manhattan. They include attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, reports the City Room blog of the New York Times.

Shahzad allegedly received money from a co-conspirator in Pakistan that he believed to be working for Tehrik-i-Taliban and used the money to buy what he needed—including a used Nissan Pathfinder—to make the would-be car bomb. Shahzad also allegedly was trained in Waziristan, Pakistan, by individuals associated with the extremist group.

His lawyers declined the newspaper’s request for comment.
