Akerman is acquiring 30 trial lawyers from a dissolving litigation law firm based in Houston.

The new lawyers from dissolving firm Beirne, Maynard & Parsons will give Akerman offices in Houston, San Antonio, Austin and New Orleans, Texas Lawyer (sub. req.) reports. The Florida-based Akerman already had a Texas office in Dallas.

Ten other lawyers with the dissolving firm are forming their own litigation boutique, called Parsons, McEntire, McCleary & Clark.

One of the lawyers going to the new boutique, Jeffrey Parsons, told Texas Lawyer the group decided to form their own firm because of disagreement on the future direction of Beirne Maynard. He said the Akerman deal wasn’t even in the picture when the group gave notice several weeks ago.

One of the lawyers joining Akerman, Martin Beirne, told Texas Lawyer that talks with Akerman had been ongoing for years, but they became serious in the last two months. The pending departure of the 10 other lawyers wasn’t the reason for the move to Akerman, he said. Several law firms had approached Beirne Maynard, but Akerman had a “rare combination of talent and practice,” Beirne said.
