The chief of staff for Alabama's state attorney general says his boss is "shocked" by news that the attorney general's office is being federally investigated.

At least six former employees of Attorney General Troy King, including three investigators, were called last week before a federal grand jury in Montgomery, reports the Birmingham News in a breaking story tonight. It isn't clear exactly what is being investigated, and King hasn't been accused of any crime.

Although the grand jury was convened in the Middle District of Alabama, the probe is being run from the Northern District of Alabama in Birmingham, the newspaper writes.
