By the time Arthur Packel’s wife realized he had Alzheimer’s disease, the now-retired lawyer had stopped paying their bills for some time. And she couldn’t figure out what he had done with much of the money, reports the New York Times.

Now Renee Packel, 75, works as a receptionist to support the couple, and they had to move to an apartment after selling their home and other assets.

“It’s such a complete turnaround,” she tells the newspaper. “Arthur was a very, very bright man.”
