An hour spent on a security checklist developed by a newspaper columnist can significantly enhance the chance of avoiding hack attacks, he contends.

Published in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal (sub. req.), the checklist by personal technology columnist Geoffrey Fowler guides the reader through software updates, password improvements and browser privacy, encryption and Internet surfing practices that will help you avoid trouble.

First check for malware, if your computer is running strangely, Fowler recommends. “Then dedicate an hour, and work your way through this checklist, starting at the top. Even if you only get through a few areas, you’re less likely to be hacker bait.”
