Foley Hoag is the latest law firm to deem two leaders better than one.

Corporate transactions partner William Kolb, 48, and environmental/energy partner Adam Kahn, 45, will be co-managing partners of the firm, replacing Robby Sanoff, according to the Am Law Daily and a press release. Sanoff has served since 2004 and is returning to full-time litigation practice.

Other law firms replacing single leaders with two include McDermott Will & Emery, and Willkie Farr & Gallagher, according to the Am Law Daily.

The publication asked Kolb and Kahn why the co-leadership model was chosen. Kolb answered the question. “Foley Hoag actually has had the co-managing partner structure in the past,” he said. “I’m not sure it works for every law firm but it works for us. Adam and I have worked together at the firm for 20 years. What it does is it allows us to manage the firm but also continue to do client work. We both have active practices and we look forward to continuing that.”

Kolb told the Am Law Daily that both he and Kahn have styles in which they try to achieve consensus. Apparently, communication is part of that style.

According to Kahn, “I talk to Bill more than I talk to my wife, that’s for sure. And I love my wife.”
