Updated: As observers wait to see what happens with a large block of Howrey partners who have reportedly received offers from Winston & Strawn, two of their colleagues have left Howrey for other law firms.

Ropes & Gray has confirmed that intellectual property litigator James Batchelder, 47, has joined as a partner, reports the Recorder in an article reprinted in New York Lawyer (reg. req.).

Mark Rowland, who serves as managing partner of the Palo Alto office of Ropes & Gray, says his firm has been trying to recruit Batchelder for years, but lost out earlier to Howrey’s acquisition of all of Day Casebeer Madrid & Batchelder’s lawyers.

And Chicago’s Levenfeld Pearlstein has announced that veteran litigation partner Michael Padden, 54, has moved there. His practice focuses on IP, antitrust and business litigation.

“We are fortunate to have come through the financial downturn of the last few years in a strong, financially stable condition that has positioned us for growth in key practice areas and made us an attractive option for lateral attorneys,” firm chairman Bryan Schwartz said in a press release.

Meanwhile, as a subsequent ABAJournal.com post details, a 17-lawyer group is exiting Howrey’s office in Brussels for Shearman & Sterling.

And It’s Howrey Doody Time, an anonymous blog on which some apparent insiders are posting, recaps what it bills as a series of marketing stumbles by the firm over the years.
