Another Texas DA steps in to help 10-prosecutor office cope after Kaufman County DA is slain
In the wake of a weekend slaying of a Texas district attorney and his wife that has put law enforcement officials there and elsewhere on high alert, a district attorney from another jurisdiction has gone to Kaufman County to help the 10-prosecutor office cope with the situation.
Randy Reynolds, who serves as district attorney for the 143rd District in West Texas, is in Kaufman County along with executive director Rob Kepple of the Texas District & County Attorneys Association, Texas Lawyer reported in an article reprinted by the Daily Report.
86th District DA Mike McLelland, 63, and his wife, Cynthia, 65, were found shot to death on Saturday in their home near Forney. Their slayings come two months after the homicide of another Kaufman County prosecutor, Mark Hasse, who was shot to death in a parking lot near the county courthouse.
A replacement for McLelland will be named “as soon as possible” by Gov. Rick Perry, according to a spokesman for the governor’s office, KVUE reports. Meanwhile, assistant 86th District Attorney Brandi Fernandez will serve as his interim replacement.
An investigation by multiple local, state and federal agencies of the death of McLelland and his wife is continuing.
