A judge on Texas’ highest criminal appeals court has filed a lawsuit challenging the state’s voter ID law.

Judge Lawrence “Larry” Meyers of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals alleges the Texas Legislature had no power to enact the law under the state constitution, the Texas Tribune reports. State lawmakers have the power to detect and punish election fraud after it occurs, Meyers says, but they have no authority to prevent election fraud.

Meyers switched to the Democratic Party last year and is now a candidate for the Texas Supreme Court, the story says. “I’m not doing this for publicity,” Meyers told the Texas Tribune. “I am doing this because [the law is] completely legally unconstitutional.”

Another suit by the U.S. Justice Department claims the Texas voter ID law violates the Voting Rights Act.
