Arnold & Porter will be adding 80 lawyers and a San Francisco office to its letterhead Jan. 1 with the acquisition of Howard Rice Nemerovski Canady Falk & Rabkin.

The two firms announced today that they have agreed to a merger, the Daily Journal (sub. req.) reports. Arnold & Porter has more than 700 lawyers; U.S. offices in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Denver; and international offices in London and Brussels.

Addiing the Howard Rice lawyers will double Arnold & Porter’s attorney roster in its three California offices.

“We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished since our founding in 1954,” said Doug Winthrop, the chairman of Howard Rice, in a press release. He will serve on Arnold & Porter’s policy committee once the two firms combine.

“Although in the past we have preferred to remain independent, we believe this time the opportunity for our clients and our attorneys was too good to pass up,” Winthrop continued. “With Arnold & Porter, we are teaming up with a firm that is dedicated to excellence, has a collegial culture like ours, and has outstanding practices that will be of enormous benefit to our clients.”
