Just because a $50 bill doesn’t check out as real when colored with a marker commonly used to detect counterfeit money doesn’t mean it isn’t the real deal.
That was the lesson learned by an arresting officer in Shelbyville, Tenn., who jailed a suspect on Friday only to be told by a sergeant in the department who works as an evidence technician that some old bills don’t react the same way as new ones, the Shelbyville Times-Gazette reports.
When the officer took the $50 bill to two banks, both determined it was legitimate. At that point, the officer apologized to suspect Lorenzo Gaspar and arranged for a judicial commissioner to release him.
