American lawyers don’t seem to worry too much about the finer points of civility, and they have the right idea, says the author of the book Lawyers Gone Bad.

With all the serious issues that court systems now face, an incivility crackdown on lawyers in Canada distracts from other more important concerns, says Philip Slayton, the former law school dean at the University of Western Ontario.

But others support the push for politeness among Canadian lawyers, which is focusing on such issues as tardiness, eye-rolling and “dismissive body language,” says CTV News, relying on a report from the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Of course, some Canadian lawyers seemingly don’t sweat civility issues. Among them might be a Toronto lawyer was suspended about two years ago for punching her client in the face.
