Six Muslim men arrested this week for allegedly plotting to storm Fort Dix in southern New Jersey and kill as many soldiers as possible with automatic weapons reportedly were close to actually doing so.

“I think they were in the last stage of planning,” U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie told the AP today. “They had training, they had maps, and I think they were very close to moving on this. … Our view was they had pretty much gotten to concluding the planning phase of this and were looking to obtain heavy weaponry – and if not from us, they were going to try to obtain it elsewhere.”

The six suspects, who are now being held without bail, were arrested Monday in Cherry Hill, N.J., as they allegedly tried to buy AK-47 assault rifles and other weapons from a Federal Bureau of Investigation informant. Three were in the U.S. illegally, two are legal residents, and one is a U.S. citizen.
